Summer BBQ tasting notes

Updated: Sep 19, 2024

We tasted a total of 32 wines this afternoon before sitting down for our BBQ lunch. I was asked by the Directors to make notes and write up for the benefits of those members who did not attend the event but would like to order the wines at the deeply discounted prices available on the order form today.

Realistically, I really cannot write about all the wines as it was a lot of work for a very short time with almost no way to sit down and write while walking around with a wine glass in hand and talking and tasting all at the same time. So here I am going to present only the wines which impressed me, worth special mention or were special in some way. Also, they may be the ones I like most.  The ones I did not mention or write about may not be bad at all. Just my personal preference.

I will present the wines in the order in the order form with the Importer and agent’s name before each group. In the followings. Prices listed are FOV special discounted price on the BBQ form for the day.

GET LIQUID – CHRIS

87385 Charme de Loire Sauvignon Blanc $16.99

A poor man’s Sancerre. Clean, citrous, true to the Sancerre style, and good value. If you like Sancerre, this is a good value alternative for you. Recommended.

890766 Bender Sket Rose Brut $21.23

Made by traditional method. Clean and refreshing. Quite elegant.

755685 Bender Rose $16.99

I am not a rose guy but I was very much impressed by this wine. Nice summer wine. But it is more serious than your average fun rose. Highly recommened.

867837 Portal 29 Grapes $28.83

This is a true Port from Portugal. A ruby Port. For its price, this is great value if you like Port. Not too sweet, just the right sweetness.

PLAID CAP IMPORTS – OWEN

855045 Chateau de Mus Roussanne Rollet $18.05

Unlike most Roussanne from Rhone which usually are heavy for a white wine, this wine is from Languedoc and is lighter and very refreshing. Nice nose, citrous, and stone fruit. I like this. Recommended.

855046 Chateau de Mus syrah & cab franc $18.05

Loads of black pepper on the nose. Nice dark colour and medium body. Soft yet assertive tannins. Good wine for BBQ and roasted red meat. One of my favourite red wine today. Recommended.

881627 Sand Point Sauvignon Blanc $16.47

Not like your usual grassy U.S. Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is citrous, fruity with round mouth feel. Refreshing and clean on the palette. One of my favourite whites of the day. Recommended.

THE DRINKS LIST – LEANNE

242214 Chateau Haut Maziers Rouge $14.92

This is an AOC red Bordeaux, 2019 vintage. Garnet in colour. Nose is true to Bordeaux, with plums, black and red fruit, with a hint of earth, soft tannins, medium body and a good finish. I have never come across a Bordeaux at this price with this level of favours. Mind you, this is not a classified Bordeaux nor for long term cellaring. But if you want to have an inexpensive and yet true Bordeaux experience, this is the wine to try. 2019 is a very good vintage in Bordeaux. Highly recommended.

815062 Goats Do Roam $12.24

This is the value white wine of the day. Very clean and refreshing. Good summer wine in the backyard. At our discounted price, load up! From South Africa.

866532 Sea Mountain Limestone Cab Sauvignon $12.78

From South Africa, 2020 vintage. Dark garnet colour. Nose loaded with blue berry and other black fruit. Medium body, nice round mouth feel. Soft tannins and a long finish. Very enjoyable now but probably will improve with 3 to 5 years of cellaring. My most favourite red of the day. It also is the value red of the tasting. In fact, I chose this wine for my lunch with the steak. Highly recommended. Load up at this price!

808763 Finca Bacara Time Waits For No One Red Skull $16.46

From Spain. The name is quite a mouthful. But the wine itself is quite a mouthful as well. Garnet colour. Medium body, soft tannins and medium finish. Very Spanish. If you like Spanish red, this is the wine for you. Good with grilled red meats.

FIRST CHOICE CELLARS - LUIGI

745555 Collazzi Otto Muri $20.80

A white from Tuscany with indigenous grapes from southern Italy. Very clean and refreshing. Round mouth feel for a white wine and yet not heavy. Nicely made. Recommended.

838344 Extroso Appassimento $16.96

A red wine made in Amarone style with Ararone method. Slightly lighter body than an Amarone yet with the same hint of sweetness and round mouthfeel. Very nice and inexpensive for its price.

855271 12 UVE $30.91

This is a wine made from 12 different grapes. It is a “super Tuscany” IGT wine.

SALIVATE WINES – CHRISTINA

789048 Tabarrino Adarmando Trebbiano Spoletino $26.58

This is an interesting white wine from Italy. The nose is chuck full of truffle. Golden colour. Medium body, slightly heavier than most white wine. Nice mouth feel. I can see myself enjoying this wine with pasta in white truffle sauce. Highly recommended.

801982 Prieler Rose Vom Stein $20.14

Another rose I like from this tasting today. Clean, refreshing for the summer in the backyard, yet serious enough for some more serious food.

793799 La Magia Rosso di Montalcino $23.29

A poor man’s Brunello di Montalcino! 2018 vintage. Garnet colour. Nose of red and black fruit. Lighter body than a Brunello, soft tannins and a good long finish. I was very impressed by the finish which lasted a good 15 – 20 seconds on the palette. For the price, this is a bargain! Recommended.
